These mature vines sit on the eastern side of Sonoma Mountain in volcanic soil where they catch the gentle morning sun but are sheltered from the more intense heat of the afternoon light. They look out over the whole valley down to the San Pablo Bay. Farmed organically and regeneratively by my buddy David Rothschild of Las Vivas wines.
In comparison to the Chardonnay in the previous release, ‘Shadows on a Hill’, from a cold and windy site, this wine is almost the opposite side of the Chardonnay spectrum. Shadows was flinty, wound up, and very racy. This Slant of Light is all about opulence, generosity, plushness, and luxury. The kind of Chardonnay people are scared to like.
Direct-pressed. Settled overnight. Racked to stainless for fermentation. Aged in neutral barrels for a year. Already showing well, but this will be amazing as it ages and loses some baby fat. It stays open for days without going to Disney land.
