Planted by Gerhard in 1999/2000 at 1700-1800ft over the Monterey Bay in the Santa Cruz Mountains on sandstone and shale. I started farming the site in 2020. Everything done by hand. No tractor. No tilling. A place of power and beauty. The steep sandy slopes are lapped by the moist ocean mists rushing up the mountains but also blessed by intense sun at this elevation.
All destemmed with pumpovers twice a day for a week. 2022 was a very warm and dry vintage. The vines struggled in the drought. Fermentation was sluggish and took an extra year in barrel to finish their sugars.
Stressed yeast induced a reductive edge to this wine. Its only now, after just over a year in bottle, that it’s all starting to come together and the wine is opening up. A great example of how winemaking can go in unplanned directions, and all I can do is go along for the ride and wait.
